The Gold Coast Railroad Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, exhibiting and operating historic railroad equipment. The Museum was formed in association with the University of Miami alumni and private individuals that "saved" the Presidential Pullman when it was determined to be U.S. Government surplus. The FERDINAND MAGELLAN, the Presidential Pullman listed as a National Historic Landmark, was built for President Franklin Roosevelt and used by Truman, Eisenhower and later, President Reagan. Some of the earliest pieces in the collection include the Florida East Coast Railway locomotive #153, which is listed on the National Historic Register as the engine that assisted the rescue effort out of Marathon, Florida after the 1935 hurricane, and the FEC #113, a steam locomotive built in 1913 which was used in regular revenue service over the entire Florida East Coast railroad. It is also home to the California Zephyr cars Silver Crescent and Silver Stag, and the Edwin Link, 2 foot gauge, children's railroad.
The Museum is located at 12450 SW 152nd Street, Miami, Florida, adjacent to the Miami-Dade County MetroZoo, on the site of the former Naval Air Station, Richmond. This air station was the second largest WWII "Airship" base in the United States. Lakehurst, N.J. was the largest. NAS Richmond was a key link in the U.S. Navy's role in protecting shipping in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean during World War II. Although the base was open only for three years, the airships and heavier-than-air aircraft based here, provided critical air support for convoys heading to Europe, and for anti-submarine warfare. The Naval Air Station exhibit is open during regular museum hours.
